Should you Plan to be Spontaneous?
Life moves fast. Most of our days are swamped with meetings, endless to do lists, deadlines and tasks. Before it gets too overwhelming, it is essential for us to pause and do something out of the check list, something purely because you feel like doing it. This can be anything from an impromptu meeting with friends or just reading your favourite book. These small breaks where you are doing what you actually like is all it takes to rejuvenate your mind and helps you get back to your routine with renewed energy and determination.
Should these spontaneous moments be planned?
Planning spontaneity. At first glance, this looks like an oxymoron. We tend to think of spontaneity as something that is impulsive and unplanned. A liberating feeling when you can do something that is not on your to do list for the day. Planning these moments does feel like taking the joy out of it. So why should you do it?
Let’s say you are invited impromptu to a movie night on an already hectic day. Your heart says yes as it wants a break but there is a nagging feeling in your mind as if you should be doing something else. It begins to panic thinking of all that is left undone.
You can't fully enjoy the moment because, in the back of your mind, you are stressed about finishing the tasks on time. The spontaneous moment you hoped would lift your spirits ends up feeling heavy instead.
We think that spontaneity doesn’t require any permission or preparation. But actually, spontaneity requires the luxury of time and that luxury often doesn’t happen by accident.
Planning ahead gives you the freedom to enjoy these moments guilt-free. It’s not about controlling every second, it’s about making room for life to happen naturally.
How to plan spontaneity?
Leave a few hours everyday
Try time-blocking. The Neorah Weekly and hourly planner is perfect for this. Break your day into manageable blocks. Resist the urge to fill every space and intentionally leave some space open. Use this time to do something unplanned, like catching up with a hobby, meeting a friend or simply resting. These pockets of freedom keep your day balanced and your mind refreshed.
2. Keep your Weekends lighter
Weekends are often when spontaneous invitations and new ideas pop up. To make room for these moments, plan your workweek so that your weekends stay lighter. Set aside a specific weekday in your weekly schedule layout to catch up on any pending tasks, this way, you can step into the weekend and take on new adventures without the stress of unfinished work hanging over you.
3. Schedule Soft days
Use the monthly pages in your Weekly planner 2025 to schedule a few soft days. These are the days with a minimal to do list and no rigid plans that you can use for slowing down and letting your plans unfold moment by moment.
4. Make a List
Make a list of things you’d love to do in the Passion Tracker page of your Neorah Weekly Planner, not as tasks to check off, but simply as inspiration. So, when you find yourself with free time, you won’t waste it mindlessly scrolling on your phone. You can glance at your list, pick something that excites you and dive in spontaneously.
When you intentionally plan for spontaneity, you are not holding yourself back, you are actually giving yourself room to breathe, to explore and to enjoy life as it comes. This makes your planner more than just a tool for ticking off tasks, it becomes a space where you can design your life to be filled with many joys, surprises and unexpected adventures.
Planning does not lessen the joy. The truth is, when you plan enough to let go, you can let the beautiful moments unfold peacefully.
